LGBT financial recognition scheme

Between 1967 and 2000 LGBT people were banned from serving openly in the UK armed forces and many were dismissed or forced to resign, stripped of medals, ranks or pensions, and subjected to investigations, harassment or imprisonment.

As a result many were left with long-term damage to their careers and mental health.

Following an ECHR ruling the ban was lifted and in 2023 the Government committed to restorative measures, and this scheme was launched in December 2024.

Compensation awards vary dependent on impact, but there is a £50,000 flat payment for veterans who were dismissed, discharged or forced to resign due to the ban.

The scheme has a two-year window within which applications must be submitted, and closes on 12th December 2026.
